I have been a keen sportsman since my childhood, playing football and running cross country at County level. I progressed from Football, Half Marathons, Marathons, 30km Races, on to Triathlon in 2009. Learning how to swim front crawl opened up a fantastic new sport to me, and it saw me get on a bike for the first time in over 30 years. I gradually increased the distance from Sprint, Standard, Middle Distance and then competed in two Long Distance events in 2012 and 2013 (3.8km swim, 180km bike, 42km run). I’ve competed twice in the Alpe D’Huez short distance event, climbing the 21 hairpin bends, and I can say that this has been my favourite challenge to date.
I know all about joint discomfort following the long distance triathlons (!) and when I moved to Whitefield in 2014 I was suffering with muscle pain in my back as well as my calf and achilles. This ultimately led me on a journey towards a career change away from being an Insurance Business Development Manager for Hastings Direct to training as a Sports Therapist.
Over the last 5 years I have concentrated on shorter runs, open water swimming and activities at the gym, focussing on functional strength, flexibility and wellbeing. I eat well, avoid meat and alcohol, try fasting on a regular basis, parasite cleanses once a year and using the sauna at the gym to sweat out impurities.
I’ve been known as Digger since I was 9 years old. A school friend noted how I used to dig my heel into the turf each time I placed the ball to take a corner or free-kick. He started calling me Digger and so did my friends and teacher. It has stuck through High School and employment and is who I am. My wife, friends and parents all call me Digger! So, if you are looking for Richard Daley on social media and can’t find me or my reviews, try looking for Digger Daley instead.
My main objective as a sports therapist is to alleviate your muscle pain, nerve pain or joint discomfort by using a wide range of treatment methods, not just massage.
